Movie Review - Varudu (2/5)

Story: ~spoiler warning~
Sandy aka Sandeep (Allu Arjun) wants to have an arranged marriage in a completely traditional way, which includes the 16 day ritual with all the relatives, and not seeing the bride till half way through the marriage. On the other hand, the bride, Deepthi (Bhanusri Mehra) does the same, and doesn’t see the groom till half way through marriage. Everything goes well and the bride and the groom fall in love at first sight. All of a sudden, the marriage set collapses and the bride gets kidnapped by Diwakar (Arya), the villain. Diwakar loves the Deepthi for her ego and ‘wants’ her. Even though everyone gives up hopes on Deepthi coming back safe, Sandy doesn’t and goes to rescue her. Towards the end, he does save her and marries Deepthi. Diwakar comes to get Deepthi again, saying that revenge will be sweeter if he takes Deepthi after marriage. However, Sandy fights Diwakar and kills him.

Analysis:
Movie is not up to mark. Many scenes are copied from other movies. Movie opens with a lip lock bet by Sneha Ullal. Such random bets have become common in movies. For example in the movie Mitrudu, Balakrishna’s character is introduced with a similar, daring bet, which is immediately followed by a song. The hero rescuing the heroine scenes seemed to be copied from Okkadu. Finally, the ending fight inspired from the X Men movie.

Graphics in the movie are pointless. Using graphics for marriage set made it artificial. The screenplay of marriage in this movie is terrible, except in a couple of instances. Don't expect the marriage scenes to be like the one in Alanati Ramachandrudu song from Murari.

Allu Arjun didn’t fit the role of Varudu well, except for the action sequences, so for the first half he is unfit for the character. The song on Bhahusa Oh Chanchala didn't suit Allu Arjun the slightest bit, and the song blew, especially right after the 5 Rojula Pelli song. On the other hand, Allu Arjun proved himself as a dedicated actor by dancing extraordinarily with a broken hand. His dedication must truly be admired.

Heroine, Bhanusri Mehra, is just average; director should have chosen someone better. She suited really well for the bridal attire, but for the rest of the movie she looked dull. In her introduction scene, she should have smiled with her eyes and lips, but when she went further and exposed her teeth, it destroyed the romantic feel. On the plus side, it is excellent that a new actress is used for the movie and kept her a secret because the audience can experience Sandy’s perspective. Thus in the heroine introduction scene, many might have felt the same as Sandy.

Arya did good as a sadist. Nothing much to comment on his role as he suited the character well. Naresh lost a lot of weight. Sunil’s dance is incredible. Bhramanandam should have been in just one scene rather than multiple nonsense scenes; it is good to see his role is limited. Rao Ramesh, Sayaji Shinde, Ahuti Prasad, Vinaya Prasad are wasted in the movie.

The use of ropes in Telugu cinema has become unnecessary; moreover, it makes the scenes look more fake. For instance, during the basketball game in the beginning, Allu Arjun makes extraordinary shots, which is completely unnecessary. When adding such stunts to the movie, directors need to be careful in making scenes more plausible. When audience see the costumes hang awkwardly and the actors flying in odd positions, it destroys the feel of the scene.

Other Things:

* Jeelakarra Bellam Science explanation is interesting.
* The heroine faints at perfect times and hero has to carry her around, to rescue her. In addition, there is the saline bottle to carry (new concept).
* There are too many cliff jumps for the Varudu.
* People should go easy on (not do) kissing scenes in Telugu, because they have to really act that part out as they can't live it like the Hollywood or the Bollywood actors.
* We have an awesome Varudu risking his life to save the girl, and the girl tells him that she is satisfied with “these” few minutes. Are you kidding, with such awesome guy why are you thinking about living only few minutes?
* Hero gets hit using a rod in a fight and he doesn’t even flinch, and gets no scratches either. Wonder why he ran from the villain in the first place if his body is made out of metal.
* "naaku jarigini avumananiki naa bharte samadanam" - the way this dialogue was said really impressed me.
* Flashback involving Arya and Bhanusri is weak.
* It is lovely how both the hero and the villain have muscles, rather than fat. This made the last fight a little enjoyable.
* The Pillar crash at the end is hilarious. (Supposed to be serious as the villain dies in the crash)
* In the end, the concept of the five days marriage went poof!

Overall:
2/5: 1 point for the incomplete marriage concept and 1 point for the effort. 1 more point off for poor use of graphics and for too much artificiality in the movie.

Bottom Line: Expected a Vivah (Hindi movie) type movie, but that is expecting way too much for this movie. This movie is awful. There is no need to run to the theater. One can watch it when the DVD gets out as there some interesting things about marriage mentioned in the movie.
